The correct answer is Grazer Oper (Opera House)!

Did you know that The Grazer Oper is the only Austrian opera house outside of Vienna?

If you think the statue resembles another famous statue – you’re correct – that was part of the inspiration for Graz artist Hartmut Skerbisch. The design was also inspired by a text by Franz Kafka to create his Statue of Liberty with sword and globe. It is 54m high, exactly as tall as the model in New York. If you look to the bottom-right of the photo you’ll see the youth theater which is called Next Liberty.

The statue was originally made for the festival Steirischer Herbst in 1992. To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, the opera “Amerika” by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati was performed in the opera house.

According to all accounts, the statue caused quite a stir around town when it was first constructed but as many other modern features in Graz – it has now become a beloved landmark.
